Award-winning studio, Koichi Takada Architects, has been redefining contemporary architecture since 2008. Celebrated internationally for its nature-inspired, human-centric approach, the practice continues to deliver projects that enrich daily life and contribute meaningfully to the built environment. With its first collaboration with Fortis now underway in Hamilton, Brisbane, we sat down with founder Koichi Takada to explore the values guiding his practice, the industry shifts shaping the future of design, and the philosophy that defines his approach to architecture.

Q—Can you please tell us a little about Koichi Takada Architects? How/when/why did the business first begin?

A—I founded the practice in 2008, right in the middle of the GFC, when most people were focused on keeping their jobs, I decided it was the right time to take a risk. Seventeen years later, we’ve grown from doing small restaurant projects to a global practice, thanks to clients who trust us to work across diverse but incredible project types, all connected by our commitment to creating architecture that adds value to place and enriches the human experience.

Q—How would you describe the underlying philosophy of Koichi Takada Architects?

A—Nature plays a fundamental role in our design ethos, not only from an aesthetic point, but because it has the power to enhance our wellbeing, by slowing our pace. Like Lao Tzu said, “Nature never rushes, yet everything is accomplished.” Therefore, a design informed by nature creates a restorative experience that encourages people to connect. When we design we consider the site history, the community and what the client aims to achieve, while delivering buildings that give back more than they take.

Q—What are some of the biggest industry trends and/or changes you’re noticing at the moment?

A—I’ve noticed an important shift in our industry towards the architecture of wellness. We design environments that foster physical and mental wellbeing and amenities that help people live fuller, healthier and more connected lives. Spaces are being designed not only to shelter, but to reduce stress and to create a deeper connection with nature.

At the same time, AI is becoming a real game-changer for architects. We see it as a tool that helps us dream bigger and push our designs further, while keeping our human and natural values at the centre.

Another critical trend is regenerative architecture. It’s no longer enough for buildings to simply be “sustainable.” They must give back more than they take, restore ecosystems, enrich communities and leave a positive legacy for future generations.

Q—What’s the most important stage of a project? Why?

A—For us, the most important stage of a project is the concept design phase. This is where the vision is born. We listen deeply to the client, the site, the community, and nature to uncover the story that the architecture should tell. If the concept is strong, authentic and aligned with the project’s values, it guides every decision that follows, from detailed design to construction.

Q—Koichi Takada Architects and Fortis have recently collaborated on their first major project in Hamilton, Queensland. Why do you think our two businesses work so well together?

A—Our collaboration with Fortis works so well because we share fundamental values and a common vision. Both practices are deeply committed to quality, not only in design and construction, but in creating places that enrich people’s lives and stand the test of time.
Fortis brings a strong focus on delivering with integrity and precision, while we bring a design ethos based on nature, community and wellbeing. Together, this creates a partnership where trust, creativity and execution come together seamlessly.

Q—At the end of a project, what does success look like for you?

A—For us, success is not just a finished building but one that truly connects people with nature and enhances community wellbeing. We want our client, consultants and builders to feel proud of what we achieved together. Success is a form that elevates the human experience.
