Arent&Pyke is an Interior Design practice based in Sydney, known for creating sophisticated and personalised spaces that blend elegance with functionality. Founded by Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke, the firm’s projects now span the country and have reached international shores, working across residential, retail, office, hospitality and hotel interiors. Currently collaborating with Fortis for the first time on our latest Elizabeth Bay project, Regency House, we sat down with Co-Principal, Sarah-Jane Pyke to discover what makes their approach to projects so special.

Q—Can you please tell us a little about Arent&Pyke?

A—Arent&Pyke was founded by Juliette Arent and myself in 2007. Juliette and I worked together in our late twenties and instantly noticed our shared design philosophy. We both believed design should feel really warm, inviting and natural which was different to what was conceived ‘popular’ at the time given preferences for a clean, minimalist interior aesthetic. Ultimately, we recognised a certain spark in each other and thought we could make magic together. We now have a team of 15 and to share this philosophy with like-minded creatives is truly special.

Q—How would you describe the underlying philosophy of Arent&Pyke?

A—Beyond the visual beauty of our work, every space should be deeply felt. We prioritise atmospheric potency and authenticity, striving to craft environments that resonate on an emotional level. Our designs, while refined, resist formality, focusing instead on nurturing a sense of belonging. This commitment to comfort and practicality is woven into every detail, from our spatial planning to our use of colour, light, and texture. Our approach is rooted in decades of expertise, but it’s our emphasis on quality and craftsmanship that ensures our interiors endure, aging gracefully and continuing to inspire delight over time.

Q—What are some of the biggest industry trends and/or changes you’re noticing at the moment?

A—The cult of personality. People want colour, layered textures and assorted patterns in their homes, which is thankfully what we’ve been offering for years. We’ve seen this mostly with the popularity of stoneboth granite and marbleadorning kitchens and bathrooms in bolder tones than customary whites. Powder rooms are also taking centre stage with immersive detailing. What we’re really noticing is that people want to feel like they have something unique, so sourcing incredible vintage furniture and lighting pieces are also on the uptick.

Q—What’s the most important stage of a project? Why?

A—The concept stage – this is where we establish the core project sentiment and direction as well as key design elements. It forms the basis of all our expressive layers, from joinery to furnishings and lighting. We present this to clients and amend where necessary to ensure we’re on track regarding the next steps of the creative journey.

Q—Arent&Pyke and Fortis are about to collaborate on their first major project. Why do you think our two businesses work so well together?

A—Fortis shares our deep respect for great design and its ability to elevate spaces and lives. Like Fortis, we pride ourselves on our high level of personal consultation. We both undertake extensive research on our target market to ensure we’re providing what they need, even if they can’t articulate it themselves.

Q—At the end of a project, what does success look like for you?

A—It’s always measured by a client’s reaction when they enter our completed projects at handover. We’ve experienced nothing short of squeals and tears of delight, ingratiating handshakes and flowing champagne. That’s the surest sign for us that we’ve done our job: listening, innovating and delivering. Lately, that’s included the creation of dream homes for empty nest clients downsizing from family homes we’ve created. We’re thrilled to report that they’re embracing their newfound freedom through adventurous design.
