Smart Design Studio has been pioneering modernist architecture with a commitment to form-driven functionality since its founding in 1998. Known for a distinct signature style that highlights the natural contours of each site, their work seamlessly integrates beauty and purpose. Currently collaborating with Fortis on our first-ever Elizabeth Bay project, Regency House, we sat down with Founder and Principal, William Smart, to delve into the philosophy behind this dynamic, multi-discipline design studio.
Q—Can you please tell us a little about Smart Design Studio?
A—I founded Smart Design Studio in Sydney in 1998 after a stint working abroad. Over the past 25 years, our multidisciplinary practice has grown to over 45 people. Initially I started working from home, before redeveloping two terraces in Surry Hills into offices with a penthouse above. We happily worked there until 2018 when we moved to our current headquarters in Alexandria. This converted warehouse, again with a penthouse above, is purpose built for how we work and showcases what we can do.
Q—What is the underlying philosophy of Smart Design Studio?
A—Our underlying philosophy can be summed up in 3 words: excellence, innovation and collaboration. Our efforts focus on getting great buildings built: we apply our extensive experience in design and documentation to each project we undertake, whilst striving to introduce innovation and new concepts to continually invigorate our work. This approach achieves a unique quality for each project and encourages continual growth in our studio.
We believe great architecture is “designed from the inside out”. We take a holistic approach to the design of buildings and offer interior design services which work in synergy with our architectural design services. Great interior design is integral to a fully immersive architectural experience.
Q—What are some of the biggest industry trends and/or changes you’re noticing at the moment?
A—Sustainability is front and centre of a lot of decisions we are making at the moment. I also feel apartment living is no longer a compromise and that a lot of people aspire for apartment living these days. This shift in perception has been an evolving and we approach the design like homes rather than thinking how can we fit a particular number of rooms within the smallest footprint possible.
Q—What’s the most important stage of a project? Why?
A—Every stage of a project is important to us, but the early planning stage is the most critical in establishing the framework for the project. And it’s not only about getting the big picture right, the devil is in the detail, so we document and resolve everything so the lines on the page can be translated into something with beauty that is built to last.
Q—Smart Design Studio and Fortis are about to collaborate on their first major project. Why do you think our two businesses work so well together?
A—Both businesses share an appreciation for design excellence and quality which has made it a smooth and enjoyable collaboration. It is also refreshing that Fortis are open to new ideas and different ways of working. At Smart Design Studio, we are focused on innovation, and we consider each project with a unique lens every time. The two businesses are united in this approach.
Q—At the end of a project, what does success look like for you?
A—Our projects are designed for longevity, so knowing that a project will age well in its place is the ultimate success for me. We also love receiving positive feedback from our clients and the people inhabiting the spaces we design.
